During the first day of the trial against Darrell Brooks Jr., accused of being involved in the massacre in Waukesha, Wisconsin, by fatally running over six people and leaving dozens injured in November 2021, the suspect had to be removed from the courtroom twice.
Waukesha County Circuit Judge Jennifer Dorow had to expel twice to Brooks due to repeated interruptions during the hearing after previous warnings that he could not continue to bother.
In total, Dorow had to ask for six breaks during the hearing between the 8: 30 am and noon this Monday, not counting the two times he had to take it out, reported the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
As a consequence , the judge said that if the interruptions continued, she would appoint a lawyer to be present during before the trial, which is scheduled from this Monday until October 28.
The name of Brooks gained national notoriety after a Waukesha Christmas parade was brutally interrupted by a speeding car that ran over people, leaving six dead with dozens injured, an incident in which he is the prime suspect.
Upon his arrest, Brooks received more than 70 criminal charges, including six for first-degree intentional homicide with the use of a weapon dangerous, 61 for recklessly endangering safety with the use of a dangerous weapon, six for hit and run involving death, two counts of jumping bail and two more of domestic assault.
Meanwhile, jury selection has finally begun, but it could take several days to complete, and includes hundreds of candidates. The selection involving a total of 315 potential jurors had to start around 2: 00 Monday pm due to constant interruptions from Brooks.
Waukesha County District Attorney Sue Opper previously noted that she anticipated it would take five to seven business days for prosecutors to present her case. However, there is no indication of the exact time that Brooks will argue his defense.
For his part, Brooks waived his right to an attorney, so he could represent himself same. Experts say that if Brooks is allowed to represent himself, the process could take time.
