The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, celebrated the Brazilians on Sunday for a “successful” first electoral round and expressed his wish that the second round in the South American country take place “with the same spirit of peace and civic duty”.
Blinken shared it this way on his account on the social network Twitter, in what appears to be the first reaction on the part of the United States government to the presidential elections in Brazil, whose result will be defined in the second round with a face-to-face meeting between former executive Luiz Inácio Lula and current president Jair Bolsonaro.
“We congratulate the people and institutions of Brazil for a first successful electoral return and we support the exercise of their right to freely elect their next leader. We share with Brazil the confidence that the second round will be held in the same spirit of peace and civic duty”, said Blinken.
According to the Court Electoral Superior (TSE) of Brazil, after having scrutinized the 99% of the voting records, Lula obtained the 48.21% of valid votes, versus to the 43.39 % of Bolsonaro.
As none of the presidential candidates has managed to reach more than half of the votes, a second round will have to be held next 30 in October to decide who will be the next president of Brazil.
