A man was fatally shot in a shooting at a hotel near Marist College in New York as parents and students gathered for “Family Weekend.”
Authorities received a report of a gunman with a long gun at the Courtyard Marriott in Pughkeepsie before 8:00 Sunday morning.
When the police arrived at the hotel, they found a man inside who had a fatal gunshot wound. He was taken to a local health center where he was pronounced dead.
In addition, officials located two suspects in the hotel area who were taken into police custody, according to Chief Joseph Cavaliere. Detectives recovered a firearm and materials “used to make explosives,” the chief stated.
“During the search of the building, a hotel room was found that contained manuals related to the manufacture of explosive devices, as well as materials with the potential to be used as explosives,” revealed the authorities in a statement.
For its part, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said that members of its New York team were at the scene collaborating with the police.
Some police sources reported that the shooter and another man were smoking a PCP-like substance in their room hotel on Sunday morning. The killer went downstairs to the lobby for coffee, but got into an argument with hotel staff and others, then pulled out a gun and shot.
On Sunday night it had not yet been clarified whether the shooting victim was the main target or what role he played during the altercation in the lobby.
Authorities have not released the identity of the victim or the alleged shooter, but a statement from Marist College identified the person killed as the relative of a current student.
“This morning, the authorities reported the tragic and fatal shooting of a family member of a Marist student at a local hotel several miles from campus. Our deepest condolences to the family and we offer all the support of the Marist community”, the school wrote to the students.
