Two thieves who stole 9,000 dollars in cash after a wild car chase in the Upper East Side were captured thanks to a debit card that was left by one of the suspects in the Mercedes Benz they stole to carry out the crime on September 3.
Denis Piters, aged 29 from the Bronx, was arrested Wednesday and was charged with robbery with a firearm, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of stolen property.
According to the criminal complaint, a District investigator 19 said that recovered the cash application card bearing Piters’ name from inside the Mercedes.
The thief has not been able to pay the bail of 250, dollars in cash, and as of Saturday night, he was on Rikers Island waiting for his court hearing.
Piters’ alleged accomplice, Cristian Santana, aged 32, was captured on 21 of September. He was released on a bond of 32, 000, according to court documents.
Both are accused of using the Mercedes to chase a man driving a Toyota RAV 4 through the Upper East Side in an attempt to steal money from him.
The chase that was captured on video included a period of driving the wrong way on Second Ave. near E 91st St. Piters and Santana rammed the Mercedes into the Toyota.
One of the men got out of the vehicle and hit the windshield with the gun of the victim, before stealing a bag with 9, 000 dollars in cash.
The thieves fled the scene and the authorities found the Mercedes a few blocks from the scene, with the ATM card and other evidence, including fingerprints.
