The director general of the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia, arrested on Friday by Russia, which controls the site, was released, announced this Monday, announced the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which has experts on site .
“I welcome the release of Igor Murashov”, said the director general of the instance, Rafael Grossi, on Twitter. “I received confirmation that he returned home safe and sound,” he added.
Murashov had been stopped by a “Russian patrol” when he was going from the plant to the city of Ernogodar, controlled by the Russians, according to the Ukrainian operator Energoadom. Then, he was “led blindfolded to an unknown place,” according to the same source.
“This crime is a new act of state terrorism on the part of Russia and represents a serious violation of the international law”, condemned the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba.
The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is the largest in Europe. It has been occupied since the beginning of March by Russian troops and is located not far from the demarcation front line between the Ukrainian and Russian controlled territories.
The plant is also located in one of the Ukrainian territories illegally annexed by Russia on Friday. An IAEA delegation has been on site since last month.
