An immigrant was shot to death while in custody at a Border Patrol station after he allegedly “searched” for an officer’s weapon in El Paso, Texas.
The detainee was at the station at the time of the incident, but had to be taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries.
According to the spokesman for the National Border Patrol Council, Brandon Judd, the immigrant “reached for an officer’s weapon” just before the shooting began, adding that officers used “appropriate force at the time,” Fox News reported.
“At approximately 1: 00 pm, the FBI Field Office in El Paso was contacted by the U.S. Border Patrol Ysleta Station regarding an agent involved in a shooting involving a person detained at the station,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey R. Downey. of El Paso.
In the scene of the incident was the Violent Crimes Task Force and the El Paso FBI Evidence Response Team, Downey said.
Following the shooting, it was reported that one person had been detained and transported to a local hospital for medical treatment, but died of her injuries, according to the FBI special agent in El Paso.
“The FBI, the El Paso Police Department and the US Customs and Border Protection Office of Professional Responsibility are actively working on the scene at this time. As this is an ongoing investigation, no further information can be provided at this time,” Downey said.
The investigation is being carried out by the Violent Crimes Task Force and Response Team. to El Paso FBI Evidence, and are assisted by the El Paso Police Department, as well as the CBP Office of Professional Responsibility.
