indonesia-suspends-those-responsible-for-arema-for-life-for-the-stampede-that-left-125-dead

In Indonesia they announced this Tuesday the life suspension of a director of the Arema club and the person in charge of the security of their stadium due to the stampede registered this weekend and which caused the death of some 125 people.

The spokesman for the disciplinary committee of the Indonesian football federation, Erwin Tobing, indicated in a press conference the suspension of the club’s chief executive, Abdul Haris, for being in charge of the club’s logistics, as well as the head of security at the Suko Sustrino stadium.

The event occurred during the night of this Saturday, after about 3, 000 Arema fans entered the field as a protest, after the defeat 3- 2 that his team suffered against Persebaya Surabaya.

Fans clashed with police officers, who finally repelled the riots with tear gas.

The gases generated desperation among those present and this caused a strong stampede that brought with it the large number of deaths.

Initially, the organizers of the event had agreed that Persebaya fans will not enter the match to avoid violent acts, which are already common in Indonesian football.

However, after losing at home, the Arema fans unleashed the violent acts, who also claimed the lives of some 32 minors.

Most of the victims died of suffocation, trauma or being trampled, according to hospital sources and witnesses.

In his regulations, FIFA prohibits the use of tear gas inside soccer fields due to its danger in these environments.

Some fans caused damage and even burned police vehicles in a situation described as ” anarchic” by the security forces.

The Indonesian Government has committed to clarifying the causes of the event, described as the worst tragedy in Indonesian football and one of the worst episodes s in this sport ever recorded worldwide.
