A woman was killed by a train at Penn Station and a young man was miraculously rescued after being pushed onto the tracks at the Union Square station of the New York Subway.
Both stations have an NYPD station. The 25 year old male victim was standing on a platform on Line 6 when another man randomly pushed him towards the bed of the tracks last night around 9: 30 pm and then fled, police said.
Before a train could run over the victim, some bystanders managed to bring him back to the platform. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition to receive treatment for a head injury. Police were still searching for the shooter hours later, Daily News reported.
Previously, a homeless woman was fatally struck by a subway train in Manhattan on Saturday morning.
The victim, believed to be in her forties, was on the tracks when she was struck by a subway car at the subway station 1/2/3 at 34th Street and 8th Avenue at Penn Station around 6: 25 am
The train operator tried to stop in time, but ended up hitting the woman, said the policeman. The first and FDNY agents attempted to save her, but she was pronounced dead a short time later. It was not immediately clear how the victim ended up on the tracks, reported New York Post.
The day before, two people died in less than hours on the New York Subway in incidents at stations in Manhattan and Brooklyn on Thursday and Friday.
Mayor Eric Adams, whose election campaign focused on public safety, has implemented various measures to make the subway safer, including deploying more police in stations and cars. But so far the violence is still on the rise.
In general, this year there has been a long list of dramatic situations in the New York subway, including robberies, attacks, accidents, natural deaths, suicides, fatal overdoses and homicides. In particular, last April was one of the most violent months in the history of the New York Subway since its founding in 1904.
A strong 84% of New Yorkers believe that conditions have worsened in the city since March 2020, when the pandemic began, according to a survey. The majority cite the problems in the Metro as one of the main reasons for the urban deterioration and the refusal to return to work in the offices.
