North Korea expressed on Tuesday its support for the annexation of Ukrainian territories by Russia and criticized the United States and its allies for trying to condemn Moscow’s behavior in the United Nations (UN).
Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the annexation of four occupied regions of Ukraine following pseudo-referendums organized by the Kremlin that were condemned as “farces” by the West.
The North Korean Foreign Minister, Jo Chol, defended that the voting was legitimate and organized in accordance with “the principles of equality of peoples of the United Nations Charter,” said the state agency KCNA. “An overwhelming majority of voters supported integration into Russia,” Jo said in a statement released by the agency.
Russia vetoed on September 30 an initiative led by the United States to condemn the annexations in the UN Security Council. No country backed his veto, and China and India abstained. Given this, Jo assured that the United States interferes in the internal affairs of independent countries and that it “abused” the Security Council.
“The days in which the United States could use the Council of Security of the UN as its shield and its means of aggression to maintain its supremacy”, affirmed the minister.
“If the Security Council is going to violate the independent rights and fundamental interests of a State sovereign, with the illogical and mafioso double standard that goes against the objectives and principles of the UN Charter, will be fully responsible for the consequences that this causes”, he added.
