In New York, the interior and surroundings of warehouses are often crime scenes, both robberies and homicides.
In early July, a Dominican employee was arrested for killing an intruder during a confrontation at a warehouse in Harlem. Days later he was exonerated of all charges, in the midst of a controversy in which even the mayor of New York, Eric Adams, supported him saying that he was a worker who had acted in self-defense. The case also served to revive complaints about the growing insecurity in New York stores and warehouses.
As of the beginning of July 195 robberies had been reported in NYC warehouses in 2022, police said. At this point in 2021 only 74782 had been reported such robberies. “The numbers are even higher. The numbers are not reported,” warned Frank García, president of the National Association of State Chambers of Commerce (NASC). According to him, some owners do not report all crimes because they have lost confidence in the police and the criminal justice system in New York.
Attacks are common to employees, customers and neighbors. In August of this year, a Hispanic man was stabbed to death while arguing over $ dollars in a warehouse in Inwood. In January, a woman and her pit bull dog were killed in a shooting inside a Brooklyn grocery store. At the end of November, a young man aged 18 died after being shot several times. times, being a customer of a warehouse in Staten Island (NYC). In October of 2021 an immigrant store clerk was stabbed to death in East Harlem in an apparent brawl over 30 cents in the price of a cigarette.
