For those looking to keep their blood sugar under control, it is important to consider the drinks and foods that are consumed, as they can cause sugar spikes or sudden high levels of glucose in the blood.
1. Water
Water is the healthiest drink to keep you hydrated without raising blood glucose levels. Drinking enough water is the best drink when blood sugar levels are high. Water can help the body eliminate excess glucose through urine.
2. Black coffee
Coffee is a healthy drink that can benefit the body when consumed in moderation and without sugar.
Although ingestion of caffeine may increase blood sugar in the short term, according to the School Harvard Public Health, long-term studies have shown that regular coffee drinkers have a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to non-drinkers.
“Polyphenols and minerals such as magnesium in coffee can improve the effectiveness of insulin and glucose metabolism in the body”, explains Harvard.
3. Green tea and black tea
Like coffee, green tea and black tea are rich in polyphenols, both of which can have health benefits; ideally when consumed without added sugars.
Polyphenols in teas can increase the activity of the insulin. Observational research has found that drinking 2-3 cups of tea daily can reduce the risk of diabetes.
Worst beverages for controlling blood sugar
Beverages loaded with added sugars are the worst for controlling blood sugar levels. Especially when drunk on an empty stomach.
According to dietitian and author of the 2-Day Diabetes Diet, Erin Palinski-Wade, “Beverages with added sugar are quickly absorbed into the body, which can increase blood sugar and insulin levels,” said the dietitian via Mind Body Green.
Sugar-sweetened beverages are any beverage with added sugar or other sweeteners. These drinks include soft drinks, colas, tonics, fruit punch, sweetened powdered drinks, as well as sports and energy drinks.
Harvard points out that apart from soft drinks, energy drinks they have as much sugar as soft drinks.
