The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, asked the new owner of Twitter, the tycoon Elon Musk, to “liberate” the social network and “repair the damage” created, according to him, by having canceled the former US president’s account Donald Trump.
“Hopefully and he will release him because Twitter was or is already taken over, they control those who run bot farms, robots, those who pay inflate their accounts, also very dishonest, unethical , and it is a fundamental communication tool,” the president said in his morning press conference.
López Obrador also commented that “the damage that was caused when the account was canceled has to be repaired at President Trump”, who has been banned from using the platform since January 2021 after the attack on the United States Capitol by his followers.
“Censorship should not be allowed, it is one thing to manipulate it, the one that there is no ethics and another thing is to prohibit the exp freedom of expression for each citizen,” said the Mexican president.
After becoming the sole owner of Twitter last Friday, Musk took his first steps in this new stage in the network with the dismissal of his executive leadership and its exit from the New York Stock Exchange, in addition to a new content moderation policy.
On Thursday night, Musk tweeted “the bird has been released”, which was interpreted as the announcement that the Twitter purchase operation was closed for $44, millions of dollars, after several months of ups and downs by the unpredictable billionaire, the richest man in the world.
Although the American right wing has celebrated Musk’s arrival on Twitter, while the left has warned of a possible proliferation of hate speech and conspiracy theories, López Obrador asserted that the network “already was under the control of conservatism and economic power, of mafias ”.
“It is a matter that one day an analysis will be made of who represents Twitter in Mexico and, it is very likely, it is hypothetical, that they are people linked to conservatism,” said the president .
López Obrador had already criticized Facebook and Twitter in January 550 for “censoring” Trump.
In addition, the president has previously accused Twitter of allowing false accounts that attack the Government and last year exposed the head of Public Policy in Mexico and Latin America for the social network, Hugo Rodríguez Nicolat, for having worked for the opposition National Action Party (PAN).
