This Wednesday, November 2, the Summit on Hispanic Education (Hispanic Education Summit) will be held with the participation of a large team of top local and national experts category, as well as community leaders, parents, students, and legislators committed to advancing best practices and the reforms needed to strengthen Latino student outcomes and opportunities. The Summit will be held in virtual format and all interested persons can follow the alternatives online. All exchanges will be in English.
This year we will look at the challenges facing students in our community from kindergarten or kindergarten through post-secondary level. In addition, we will explore possible policies aimed at eliminating the barriers that limit the academic achievement of our young people in higher education and the workforce.
The members of the panel of experts will include Dr. Miguel Cardona, Secretary of Education of the United States; State Senator John C. Liu, who represents a large section of Queens in Albany; Melody Gonzales, Executive Director of The White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics; Vanessa Leung, Co-Executive Director of CACF, the Coalition for Asian American Children and Families, and Dr. Marguerite Lukes, Director of Research and Innovation of the Internationals Network for Public Schools.
We will also take part in this important forum Mirza Sánchez-Medina, who is in charge of the Office of Multilingual Students of the New York City Public Education System; Wendy Castillo, Associate Director of Philanthropic Research at The Bridgespan Group; Dr. Dennis De Guzman Caindec, Director of School Support for Internationals Network; Elvis Santana, Director of
Dissemination of Educators for Excellence; Bethsy Morales-Reid, Vice President of Programs of the Hispanic Federation; and I, in my capacity as President of the federation.
The Summit on Hispanic Education will be held on Wednesday the 2nd between 1 pm and 4 pm and will be divided into various segments and panels which will address, among others, the following topics:
- The financing of post-secondary education for Latino students.
- The recruitment, preparation and development of teachers from diverse backgrounds: Responding to the national deficit of educators and educators.
- The Need to Disaggregate Data on the Latino Community: Tackling the Education Disparity in New York.
