Maine first responders posted a photo showing the moment a hypothermic man, 74 years old, he was rescued after spending almost 30 hours lost in the woods.
Joseph Nolin could no longer move Monday afternoon, just as a ranger, accompanied by a sniffer dog, spotted him near Etna Bog, west of Bangor, authorities said.
Nolin knew his ordeal was over when he heard the bell attached to the Labrador retriever’s collar. The dog started licking Nolin, his son told the guards.
Nolin walked until he couldn’t move and told them the guards that he would not have survived another night in the woods. He was found about a mile from his home deep in the woods on the edge of Etna Bog, authorities said.
A photo released by officials shows a team of rangers carrying him away on a stretcher .
A Maine Forest Service helicopter was used to retrieve Nolin, and he was released after being hydrated and warmed, authorities said.
Nolin had last been seen Sunday morning when he left his house to check out a set of cameras set up in the woods.
His son reported him missing on Sunday night.
