The United States and Saudi Arabia are on high alert after Saudi intelligence shared with the United States indicated that Iran is expected to launch an attack against Saudi Arabian targets, according to reports published by the Wall Street Journal.
Officials from both countries assured the Journal that there is concern about the attacks that Iran would give, and added that in addition to the Saudi targets, Iran also plans to attack Erbil, Iraq, where US troops live, according to reports.
It is speculated that the planned attacks are intended to distract the protests that have taken place in Iran against the leadership of the Islamic nation.
During a briefing this Tuesday, the press secretary of the Pentagon Air Force Birg, General Pat Ryder , pointed out that the United States remains “concerned” about the “threat situation in the region”, and is in “regular contact” with Saudi officials.
“We will reserve the right to protect and defend ourselves no matter where our forces are serving, whether in Iraq or anywhere else,” said Ryder, who declined to provide information on any specific threats.
Iran warned Saudi Arabia not to cover the protests on Farsi-language news stations, and accused the Saudi nation, Israel and the United States, of being responsible for the demonstrations.
“This is our last warning because you are interfering with our internal advertisements through these means,” said the senior General Hossein Salami in statements that were released by Iranian state media, the Journal reported. “You are involved in this matter and you know that you are vulnerable”.
