A New York police officer shot a man wielding a machete in self-defense 20 inches and a large knife in the middle of the street yesterday in Brooklyn.
According to police officials, the shooting occurred in the East New York neighborhood on the block 79 of New Lots Avenue, shortly after 4 pm yesterday, reported NBC News.
Police was searching for the suspect after he allegedly assaulted a family member and a 58 year-old home health aide in separate incidents that same day, according to NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey.
Officers found the suspect sitting on the steps outside his home on New Lots Avenue, Maddrey said. An NYPD lieutenant approached him and yelled his name.
In response, the suspect allegedly got up and approached the officer with a machete and a meat cleaver in his hand. each hand, according to police. The agent told him to drop the bladed weapons he was holding, but he refused to comply, Maddrey said.
“When the man advanced on the lieutenant and approached, the lieutenant fired two rounds of his gun, hitting the man in the groin/thigh area,” Maddrey continued, quoted by Pix11.
The suspect, who did not was immediately identified, he was taken to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition. The machete and knife were recovered at the scene, according to mug shots.
The NYPD later broadcast a live report on the incident on Twitter.
