Crocodile attacks near a river in India have left locals living in “constant fear”, according to a press report.
In an attack along the river Kali, in the Indian district of Uttara Kannada on Thursday, a crocodile plunged a man underwater while he was swimming, Newsroom Odisha reported.
Police said locals witnessed the horrific incident. At this time, the police have not publicly identified the victim.
Newsroom Odisha reported that locals said: “We live in constant fear”, that “children’s safety is also in danger” and that local officials have not done enough to address the problem.
Fear of the arrival of the crocodiles
The crocodiles they have recently arrived in the villages, entering the houses and eating cattle, according to the media.
For its part, the New Indian Express reported in June that three people died this year due to the attacks of crocodiles in the Kali river, and the local forestry department put up warning signs to warn visitors about the animals.
“In addition to tourists, several devotees come to the Kali river to offer prayers. Whether it is final rites or rituals that involve immersion while visiting a temple that is along the Kali River, many times they risk their lives by getting too close to the water or sometimes even entering the river for a short distance without knowing the current and the threat. of the crocodiles,” an official from the Haliyal Forestry Division told the newspaper at the time.
“The boards will alert the population about the possible presence of crocodiles in the area”, added the official.
