The president of Barcelona, Joan Laporta, recalled that Gerard Piqué, who will play his last professional game against Almería next Saturday at the Camp Nou, “is part of the shield” of the Barça club.
“Gerard, in addition to the successes he has achieved, that he has won everything, is part of the Barça shield. He will always be a reference“, Laporta said in statements to Barça TV shortly after the center-back announced his retirement as a professional footballer in a video published on his social networks.
The Barça president admitted that “ In recent months” he had spoken with the center-back about the “possibility” of retirement, although he pointed out that “because of who he is” the club decided to “leave this decision in the hands of the player.”

Laporta described the Barcelona defender’s decision as “incontestable Barcelonanism” and , regarding the organization of an act of homage, specified that the entity is at “your disposal” so that this “withdrawal process is as culer as possible”.
“What we will do what Gerard wants in the sense that he feels comfortable”, he added.
Finally, the president of the Barça entity pointed out that the agreement to terminate the central defender’s contract, which expired in June of 2024, “is in the process of being finalized” and that the footballer is “willing to help the club”.
“Gerard perfectly understands the club’s situation with regard to ‘fair play’ and the sports wage bill. There is a great willingness on the part of the player to help the club”, he concluded.
