The technical director of Canada, John Herdman, supported his manager Alphonse Davies on Wednesday after missing the penalty against Belgium that was saved by the Devils goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois.
After the game Herdman took the microphones at a press conference and pointed out that you have to “have a lot of courage” to take the ball and try to score Canada’s first goal in the World Cup 36 years later.
“We wanted to score that first goal. I am proud of Alphonso; it is a very big moment. We have the weight of a nation for the 36 years of waiting. I am very proud to see him take that ball because you have to have a lot of courage”, he pondered at a press conference.
Herdman also regretted not having been able to get the three points but at all times he was proud of his players, who had a game with positive reviews but could not break down the wall of the Courtois himself.
“We have shown that we deserve to be here. Our fans have also tried to win the battle; we can leave proud of what we have done. We are a soccer nation. We had some objectives that we have not been able to achieve”, he said.
Finally, he stressed that in order to seek to advance to the 8th, they must remain united as they have been doing and assured that there are still possibilities for equality between Croatia and Morocco.
“The group stage is completely open after the result between Morocco and Croatia. After a match like this I have told my players that I am very proud of what they have done. We have to stay united, “he finished.
