Multiple tornadoes have touched down amid a “particularly dangerous” weather situation underway in the South, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

There have been dozens of tornado watches in parts of southeast Arkansas, northern and central Louisiana, and central Mississippi through 2 a.m. as dangerous supercells bring potentially devastating tornadoes, baseball-sized hail, damaging winds and flash flooding, as reported by Fox Weather.

At 11 Tuesday night, NOAA reported at least 11 tornadoes, primarily in Mississippi and Louisiana.

A storm chaser reported observing a tornado near the freeway 81 east of Bassfield, Mississippi, with several downed trees and flashes of energy, the National Weather Service in Jackson reported.

Another tornado struck near Bywy, Mississippi around 5: 11 pm

“We are seeing downed trees throughout that area; houses are suffering severe damage. There was a trailer house turned completely on its roof,” Sergeant Dillon Cates of the Choctaw County Sheriff’s Office told the outlet.

“There was a house in the Sherwood community where lifted the roof of the house, twisted 180 degrees and dropped back onto the house,” he added.

In Steens, Mississippi, a tornado damaged Mt. Zion Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Fox Weather reported. At least two homes were also damaged in Lawrence County, Mississippi.

“We had a tornado touch down for about a mile and probably about a quarter mile wide,” Lawrence County Fire Coordinator Donnie Weeks told FOX Weather. “We had two brick houses that had significant roof damage; a couple of cattle farms were completely destroyed.”

In Louisiana, a tornado reportedly touched down along the highway 180 near Clarks and damage was reported structural. At least two people were injured inside their homes during the storm, KARV reported.

The lower Mississippi Valley has the highest tornado risk, which includes the cities of Greenville, Jackson, and Tupelo, and the threat extends from the Gulf of Mexico to the Ohio Valley.

Meteorologists declared the storm system a “particularly dangerous situation,” the highest level of a tornado warning.
