WASHINGTON – At least two people have been killed by storms accompanied by tornadoes and hailstorms in a portion of the southeastern United States home to some 40 million people , the authorities reported today.
Captain Joshua Douglas, of the Sheriff’s Office in Montgomery, Alabama, indicated that a tornado in the Flatwood area last night caused the death of a woman of 39 years old and an eight-year-old boy, and that another resident in the house was taken to the hospital.
The Storm Forecast Center The National Weather Service (NWS) indicated that reports of at least 39 tornadoes have been received since Tuesday morning, mostly in central and southern Mississippi and Alabama, as well as Louisiana.
In Louisiana four People were seriously injured and several animals were killed in Caldwell after a possible tornado hit the area during night, according to press reports.
This morning, rains and storms continued in an area that extends from the coast of the Gulf of Mexico to South Carolina and North Carolina, with warnings of Strong winds and possible tornadoes.
The NWS issued warnings for possible tornadoes until about noon in southeast Alabama, northwest Florida, and southwest Georgia.
The storm system dumped tornadoes, heavy rain and hail in some areas of central Mississippi overnight, with lightning company especially in Madison County .
Lawrence County Mississippi Sheriff Ryan Evertt told local television that two houses were badly damaged by a storm. Tree branches, trash and other debris disrupted traffic on some area streets, and residents reported power outages.
A storm destroyed a fire station in Lowndes County, Mississippi, but there were no injuries.
Keith Barnett , the director of Emergencies in Elmore County, Alabama, told local television that there were fallen trees that were blocking traffic in the southern sector of Wetumpka.
The authorities have recommended that the population make sure you have multiple means of receiving information, including cell phones and apps that keep you up to date with reports from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Conditions conducive to the largest storms strong will diminish this Wednesday, indicated the meteorologists.
