roberto-martinez-will-not-continue-in-command-of-belgium-after-being-eliminated-from-qatar

In the sports field, there are times when the best option for the future of a club or team is to be able to close cycles. On this occasion, Belgium is not an option, since by adding a new setback, they will have to face a change that for many could be key.

Belgium, matched their commitment against Croatia, which led them to say goodbye early to the World Cup in Qatar 2022, since they finished with four points out of a possible nine, taking third place.

After the elimination, the Spanish coach Roberto Martínez has decided not to continue in command of the Belgians, since for many, it has been a real disappointment; as it is one of the most powerful teams in the world.

“It’s my last game with this team. It is a very emotional moment for me. I am a person who likes to learn from lessons. I’ve been six years. He was very committed to the project. We ended up with a bronze medal and we had to give this project another chance. I have enjoyed it very much. I have left a great legacy and I am very satisfied with the result”, commented Roberto Martínez after the match.

“When I see the players in the locker room, I see players who are growing and taking advantage of all the lessons with this generation. Six years in which I have grown and I have done everything I could do with a national team. I am very satisfied with what this selection has done. And the true fans appreciate what this team has done”, the coach continued.

Martínez was in charge of Belgium for six years, reaching three Nations League and one European Championship and during this stretch, Their best result was in the World Cup in Russia 2022, since they ended up in third place.

“It was going to be the end no matter what. It is the end of a cycle and it has nothing to do with being eliminated in the group stage. I made the decision just before the World Cup. I think projects have to be long-term. Since Russia I have had many opportunities to accept offers from clubs and I have always been faithful to the Belgian team. I am not resigning, the end of my contract is coming and that was the plan from the beginning”, concluded the Spaniard.

In this way, Belgium has closed a cycle and from now on, it must focus looking for a new coach and someone who is capable of leading a group of players who, in one way or another, are considered the best in the world.
