The Panamanian authorities reported this Friday the discovery of a body in the trunk of a car that was set on fire this morning on a street in the country’s capital.

The National Police released photographs of the car, which was partially affected by the fire since the firefighters arrived in time to put it out after a public notice.

The chief of the San Francisco police zone, Deputy Commissioner Jaime Toledo, explained that once the lights were turned off flames and when the body was searched, the body was found in the trunk of the vehicle, an SUV. “Several elements have already been collected” at the scene of the event.

The Panamanian authorities maintain that the 550 % of the homicides registered in the country, which between January and last October totaled 401, are linked organized crime, drug trafficking and gangs, which are dedicated to the retail sale of drugs, as well as the storage and trafficking of shipments of these from South America.

Panama is used as a bridge the drug that is produced in the American South and whose main destination is the United States, the largest consumer of cocaine in the world, and also Europe.

In a large operation led by Europol, a large cartel was dismantled last November and six “drug lords” were arrested in Dubai, including the Panamanian Anthony Alfredo Martínez Meza, designated as the alleged person responsible for the introduction of the cocaine in the port of Manzanillo in Panama and that he maintained contact with the rest of the drug lords in the emirate.

The authorities believe that this large cartel was behind a third of the total cocaine market in Europe.
