Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will call for the economic integration of the continent at the North American Leaders Summit that he will host in January with the President of the United States, Joe Biden, and the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau.
“I do want to discuss the integration of America again at that North American Summit because it has been shown that economic integration helps us with respect for our sovereignties,” said the president in his conference newspaper, this time in the eastern state of Veracruz.
López Obrador referred to the meeting that he has scheduled for next January 9 with his North American counterparts after the last meeting in November from 2020 in Washington, where the three addressed the covid- pandemic , migration and the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC).
The president pointed out that “Mexico is doing well in, among other causes, reasons, due to the treaty”.
“Mexico is one of the countries, if not the most attractive country for foreign investment, due to the Treaty with the United States and Canada” , he affirmed.
For this reason, the Mexican ruler will insist that America integrate as a commercial and economic bloc.
“We think that the union of the countries of America must be expanded, just as the European (Economic) Community became the European Union, that is what we are proposing because then America would become the most important region in the world”, he stated.
The Mexican ruler highlighted the benefits that the T-MEC has brought, the trade agreement that entered into force in July 19 as a replacement for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
“Integration with the United States and Canada is working, We are the United States’ largest economic trading partner in the world. This has just been achieved relatively recently. The main partner of the United States was Canada”, he stated.
The trilateral summit, popularly known as the “three friends” and which was normally organized annually, was held last year for the first time since 2016, after four years paralyzed during Donald Trump’s term.
Despite López Obrador’s statements, this week the White House refused to confirm the Biden’s attendance at the meeting, although John Kirby, one of the spokesmen, said that the US president “is looking forward to” holding that meeting.
