The GEAR UP program will help students of New York who assist high-poverty middle and high schools to prepare and succeed when they are on the path to higher education.
“My administration is committed to expanding equitable access to higher education for all New York students,” said Governor Kathy Hochul.
“By providing resources to students from low-income income, we are removing the barriers to a post-secondary education and ensuring that all New Yorkers have the tools they need to thrive. Preparing our students for success will help them have the greatest competitive advantage in our state, nation, and beyond,” he added in a statement.
This is the fourth consecutive GEAR UP award received by the New York State and one of only two GEAR states funded this year by the Department of Education.
The NYGEAR UP program will be administered by the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation in partnership with the State University of New York, the City University of New York, the Commission on Independent Universities and Colleges, the New York State Department of Labor, and various other associations of state agencies.
“ New York State’s GEAR UP program has helped bring post-secondary education within reach for thousands of New York students, and I’m delighted that New York has received this award so that more underrepresented students can receive the support they need to attend. and succeed in higher education,” said Dr. Guillermo Linares, President of the New York State Corporation for Higher Education Services.
The New York State Department of Labor Commissioner York, Roberta Reardon, noted: “The GEAR program UP has proven to be a life-changing resource for students across the state, and I am thrilled to see it continue.”
