The United States sanctioned this Friday two Haitian politicians whom it accuses of having used their positions to traffic drugs from Venezuela to US territory.
The US Treasury Department reported in a statement that imposed sanctions on Senator Rony Celestin and former Senator Richard Fourcand, who have also been sanctioned by Canada.
The Government of Joe Biden accuses Celestin of having organized the importation of drugs from Venezuela to Haiti and his subsequent export to the United States and the Bahamas.
While Fourcand would have used his private aircraft to transport drugs to the south of Haiti and would have used his political influence to place people who facilitate drug trafficking in the Executive.
Under these sanctions, properties in the United States are blocked United States of both Haitian politicians and their transactions and businesses are prohibited.
“Rony Celestin and Richard Fourcand are two more examples of corrupt Haitian politicians abusing their power to further drug trafficking activities throughout the region,” said Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson.
Last month, the United States banned the Haitian Senate President, Joseph Lambert, from entering the country, accusing him of drug trafficking, corruption and serious violations of human rights.
