A man, originally from Virginia, said he won a $1 million lottery jackpot, but didn’t realize this until he was on a trip abroad.
The WDBJ information portal reported that the player, named Garland Hare, bought a Mega Millions game ticket for the November 1 draw. He later discovered that he had matched the first five numbers that won him $1 million while he was out of the country.
“It was very unexpected!” the winner told Lottery officials of Virginia.
The winning numbers of the lottery ticket of Hare were: 5-9-17-17-17. He said he selected his numbers using a combination of birthdays and family anniversaries.
According to lottery officials, Hare purchased the ticket at a store in the city of Salem, and the business received a $10 thousand dollar bonus for selling winning ticket.
Virginia Lottery said Hare’s ticket was one of seven across the country to win a $1 million prize. If you had matched all six numbers drawn, your ticket would have won you $150 million dollars.
Hare is a computer programmer and said he intends to use his earnings to pay off debts and travel more.
The raffles for Mega Millions are on Tuesday and Friday nights. Lottery officials said the odds of matching the first five numbers are 1 in 10,607,350, and the odds of matching all six numbers are 1 in 150,575,350.
