To make the report, Resume.io reviewed data on the laws of 50 countries that dictate how many days of paid annual leave by law and holidays they offer. The document says that the United States is the second worst country in terms of paid vacation days.
“The lack of paid vacation days in the United States negatively affects the balance between work and personal life in many ways,” Lotte van Rijswijk, content team leader at Resume.io, told CNBC.
The average American gets 10 paid vacation days per year after one year of working for a company, which are all holidays such as Presidents’ Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
“Studies show that 50% of American workers do not take vacations. This lack of downtime could lead to burnout and stress and, in more severe cases, depression and mental health problems,” added van Rijswijk.
The report says that most countries have a standard of 4 weeks of paid vacation, but the US is the only developed country that does not have a statutory paid vacation of this duration.
