Four suspected criminals died during a shootout with police elements in Veracruz, a Mexican state that closed the year with a violent day that included the murder of two municipal officials.
The shooting occurred at 05:00 this Saturday in the Los Filtros neighborhood of the municipality of Córdoba, in the mountainous area of Veracruz, where elements of the state Public Security Secretariat located an alleged safe house of a criminal group.
Police reports indicated that a confrontation took place at the site that resulted in the murder of four suspected criminals, as well as anxiety among inhabitants of the area.
The entity closes the year in a violent way, because yesterday, Friday, the treasurer of the municipality of Tezonapa and the mayor of the municipality of Rafael Delgado, both regions in the central mountainous area, were murdered in different events.
Veracruz ranks first at the national level with the highest number of victims of atrocities, as reported by the civil organization Causa en Común.
In a journalistic count carried out from January to October, the NGO reported that in Veracruz there were 1,166 victims of atrocities, including murders of women, mutilations and crimes against political actors.
According to the Horror Gallery: atrocities and high-impact events recorded in journalistic media in the period January-October 2022, Veracruz added at least 234 atrocities.
They highlighted 45 cases of torture, 44 murders of women with extreme cruelty and, at least, 18 violent acts against authority, in addition, 21 massacres were also perpetuated.
Thus, Veracruz occupied the first position with the most victims of atrocities, above the states of Chiapas, with 931; Guanajuato, with 661; Michoacán, with 568, and the State of Mexico, with 566.
The Government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador added 137,500 murders in his four years of government, according to official figures from the federal administration.
Meanwhile, Mexico closed with 33,308 homicides in 2021 after the two most violent years in its history, under the mandate of López Obrador, with 34,690 murder victims in 2019 and 34,554 in 2020.
