Two New Mexicans were fatally struck by an SUV while crossing a busy street against a “no walking” sign at the Fremont Street Experience casino mall, Las Vegas authorities said.
Mykael Lanice-Lynn Terrell, 28, of Las Vegas, the driver of the pickup truck left the scene Wednesday at 7:40 p.m. while under the influence of alcohol, police and a prosecutor said.
A 44-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman were on Fremont Street across from 4th Street when they were struck by a burgundy GMC Acacia driven by Terrell, police said.
The subject was pronounced dead at the scene and the woman was pronounced dead at a medical facility. The Clark County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the names of the victims as it is expected to notify next of kin.
The driver appeared in court handcuffed and a local judge did not ask her to speak, thus setting a $100,000 bail and scheduled her appearance for next January 4 for criminal charges that could give her a mandatory minimum prison sentence of two. to 20 years for each death if convicted. Also, she will be asked to plead guilty if she is charged or ordered by a judge to stand trial.
Marissa Pensabene, deputy public defender temporarily assigned to represent Terrell, told the court that her client is a single mother of a child under the age of 3 and has lived in Las Vegas for more than three years and worked as an account executive for a internet company.
For her part, Holly Stoberski, the judge in charge of the case, said that if Terrell posted bail, he would not be able to drive and would have to wear an electronic ankle monitor, reported Fox 5.
