The Toronto Blue Jays are reinforcing their bullpen for the 2023 Major League season and for this they announced the signing of Dominican reliever Julián Fernández to a minor league contract so that he can continue his preparation process to become one of the best in the Major League Large tent.
The goal of the franchise is to have a star that can add depth to the rotation and consider that Fernandez is perfect for the job. The Dominican has already been in the MLB for two years, but his performances have been affected by his stay on the disabled list.
The information was released by journalist Ben Nicholson-Smith, who explained that the 27-year-old player was part of Triple A Albuquerque due to various problems.
“#BlueJays are signing RHP Julian Fernandez to a minor contract according to source. The 27-year-old reliever spent ’22 at AAA Albuquerque and battled human resource issues. He pitched in the majors for the 2021 Rockies, averaging 99 mph on FB. He finished in 103. He recently pitched in the Dominican Winter League,” Nicholson detailed.
The San Francisco Giants took Fernández after the 2017 Draft applying Rule 5, but an elbow injury forced him to undergo Tommy John surgery in order to pitch; he spent the entire following season on the disabled list.
In 2019, he was claimed via Waivers by the Miami Marlins, although he was also injured due to constant shoulder discomfort that did not allow him to launch. In 2020 he returned with the Colorado Rockies, a franchise in which he finally saw his long-awaited Major League debut at the end of 2021.
Fernández has only played a total of six games in his entire Major League and minor league career, posting a 10.80 ERA and going 0-0.
