they-reveal-that-the-world-cup-that-messi-lifted-in-the-historic-instagram-photo-was-of-some-fans

In January 2019, the Instagram account @world_record_egg was created with the sole purpose of uploading a photograph of an egg and making it the post with the most “likes” in the history of the social network. And so it was, with more than 58 million likes.

However, in December 2022, Lionel Messi went on to dethrone the record for the image of the egg by posting his photo lifting the World Cup, which registered more than 74 million likes. But a detail that may bother many has been revealed by El País: the trophy he was carrying at that time was false.

Initially, as seen at the Lusail Stadium and on television broadcasts, Messi and the Albiceleste players lifted the real World Cup.

But minutes later and as usual, FIFA officials removed the real trophy, something that the players did not notice.

Immediately afterwards, it is time for the glorious photo of Messi that took over Instagram. But when he lowered it, his teammate Ángell di María pointed out that he was working on a replica when he saw some imperfections that the trophy had in the lower part, as can be seen in The Sun report.

Those responsible for introducing the false trophy to the field were two Argentine fans named Manuel and Paula, who approached it in order to get some signatures.

“The idea was that the players could sign it, but in the end the Cup entered the field of play three times,” Manuel said.

“The first was taken by a relative of (Leandro) Paredes, and he signed it. The second time they asked us and it took 45 minutes, he went from one player to another, from one family member to another, and they took photos of him; In the stands they told me “you lost the Cup.” We had fun but we wanted him back,” said the owner of the trophy.

“The FIFA staff came there and asked us to confirm that it was not the original,” Manuel concluded, noting that one of the people who uploaded the replica of the Cup, believing it to be the real thing, was Antonella Roccuzzo, a couple of Messi.
