ovidio-guzman-is-transferred-to-the-mexican-prison-where-“el-chapo”-escaped

On Thursday afternoon, Ovidio Guzmán was transferred to the prison where he was held and his father, Joaquín “el Chapo” Guzmán, escaped in the middle of a strong security operation in Mexico City, after being arrested in Culiacán.

In a security strategy and in order not to make the information public, the Mexican authorities first sent a convoy of eight vehicles that left around 5:30 p.m. local time from the Specialized Prosecutor for Organized Crime (FEMDO) in the Mexican capital and After 6:00 p.m., a helicopter departed from the same place.

Both teams left FEMDO for the Federal Center for Social Readaptation (Cefereso) number 1 Altiplano, also known as the Almoloya prison, located in the State of Mexico, where his father was detained and from which he escaped in 2015.

In addition, on the outskirts of the prison, a security device was also deployed with at least a dozen vehicles from the Mexican Army and the National Guard.

The arrest of Ovidio Guzmán occurred at dawn and led to various blockades, attacks with bullets, and cars set on fire in the city of Culiacán, capital of the northern state of Sinaloa.

After his arrest, the Armed Forces transferred the son of “Chapo” to Mexico City and made him available to the agent of the federal Public Ministry to determine his legal situation.

Ovidio’s arrest has caused chaos for almost the entire day in Culiacán, where violent acts were generated, including some 19 blockades with vehicles set on fire and armed attacks, including the attack on a plane at the city’s airport and the air base number 10.

In addition, all the accesses to Culiacán were closed, four of them from Los Mochis and two more at the exit to Costa Rica, Sinaloa.

School and government activities in Sinaloa were also canceled and the population was asked to remain in their homes to protect their integrity.

The Sinaloan authorities reported that, as the hours have passed, the 19 blockades, with vehicles set on fire, robberies and looting, have been decreasing in intensity.

In addition, they specified that the day so far has left 28 injured and 1 National Guard agent dead, along with more than 200 stolen cars and twenty looting of businesses.

The new operation to capture the son of “Chapo” was surprising because it occurred four days after the visit of the President of the United States, Joe Biden, for the Summit of North American Leaders, which will also be attended by the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau.

It is worth mentioning that there is an extradition request against Ovidio Guzmán, also known as “El Ratón”, which was issued on September 19, 2019, just under a month before his first arrest, on October 17 of that year, an operation known as “Culiacanazo”.

Ovidio Guzmán López, together with his brother Joaquín Guzmán López, is charged in the United States on criminal association charges related to illicit drugs.
