An explosion at an Iranian facility was reported on Saturday in an alleged drone strike that local authorities said was a “botched” attack.
“One of (the drones) was hit by the air defense and the other two got caught in defense traps and exploded. Fortunately, this failed attack did not cause any loss of life and caused minor damage to the roof of the workshop,” Iran’s Defense Ministry reported via state news agency IRNA.
Iranian news agencies reported the loud explosion and published a video showing a flash of light at the plant, which would be a munitions factory.
The images supposedly showed the impact that was circulating on the networks, while witnesses assured that three or four explosions were heard.
“(The attack) has not affected our facilities and mission… and such blind measures will not have an impact on the continued progress of the country,” the Defense Ministry statement said.
Several explosions and fires have been reported around Iranian military, nuclear and industrial facilities in recent years.
According to authorities in Iran, a sabotage team made up of Kurdish soldiers working for Israel was arrested in July. They were allegedly planning to blow up a “sensitive” defense industrial center in Isfahan.
The explosion comes as talks between the US and Iran on the nuclear deal appear to have stalled, Fox News reported.
“The Iranians killed the opportunity for a swift return to mutual compliance with the JCPOA in September when they turned their backs on a deal that was on the table, approved by all,” a US State Department spokesperson told Fox News. in December. “The JCPOA has not been on the agenda for months. It’s not our focus.”
