they-were-going-to-amputate-his-leg-and-today-he-started-in-the-fa-cup-against-leicester-city:-the-story-of-liam-gordon

Liam Gordon is a Guyanese professional footballer, born in England. Today, Saturday, January 18, he played as a starter in the fourth round of the FA Cup against Leicester City, something that is still not believed given that a few months ago he was on the verge of losing a leg.

In mid-2022, Gordon was in what was his first training session with Walsall Football Club, a team from Ligue Two (Third Division of England). But far from being a dream day, the 23-year-old footballer lived a terrible nightmare when he fell to the ground from the pain caused by what was determined to be a compound compartment syndrome.

The episode suffered by the Guyanese was the result of a series of leg cramps that would have accumulated over time. “The club physio told me that these types of injuries are usually the result of car accidents or similar sudden trauma and that there is usually a compound rupture. But that wasn’t my case, I was just running!” Gordon pointed out.

Liam said that the initial diagnosis had been a shin sprain, so he was sent home from the hospital to rest for three weeks. Today, he appreciates the intervention of the team’s professional doctors, who delved deeper and determined that an MRI had to be done, which ended up with a massive infection.

“We wouldn’t be having this conversation right now if they hadn’t. The club not only saved my career, it saved my life. I was readmitted to the hospital and the surgeons and specialists told me that I should have had surgery six hours after it happened; I had mine SIX DAYS later,” the left-back told The Sun.

Liam went on to say: “That infection almost cost me my career because I was told there was a point where the only option would have been to amputate the leg.”

“I’m pinching myself to be able to play against a Premier League team like Leicester, who won the trophy so recently,” were Gordon’s words published by The Sun.

The player, concluded his interview by adding: “All new signings are told not to worry, no one could get off to a worse start than me, with the 2K race almost killing me!”
