At least 8 Haitian citizens, in addition to a Colombian citizen and a Chilean minor are among the 25 people who died this Saturday when the bus they were traveling in fell off a cliff in the Piura region, in northern Peru, they reported. to Efe police sources.
According to the information obtained so far by the investigators, 25 people died in the accident, of which 13 have been identified, among whom 3 Peruvians were also found, one of them a minor.
“There are foreign people like Peruvians. Until now, it has been possible, preliminarily, to carry out the procedures, and we have (among the deceased) 8 Haitians, in addition to people of other nationalities,” the sources said.
They added that “there are still twelve people to be identified” among the fatalities.
The bus accident, which was carrying about 60 passengers, occurred around 3:00 am (8:00 GMT) this Saturday, on a section of the highway that connects the towns of El Alto-Los Órganos with the city of Talara, more than 1,100 kilometers north of Lima.
According to information from local media, the bus was heading towards the city of Tumbes, on the border with Ecuador, and the injured were taken to medical centers in the towns of El Alto and Mááncora, and to a clinic in Talara.
The Superintendence of Land Transport of People, Cargo and Goods (Sutran) added that it activated “all the intervention protocols, coordinating in an articulated manner with the competent authorities in order to gather information related to the accident.”
The first inquiries, he said, indicate that the bus, owned by the company Q’orianka Tours Águila Dorada, had authorization to transport people, a technical inspection certificate and mandatory traffic accident insurance.
These types of accidents in Peru are caused, in many cases, by the poor condition of the roads and the vehicle fleet, as well as by the rugged geography and reckless driving.
