Madonna’s much-hyped autobiographical film, which suffered a setback this week when it was scrapped by Universal amid reports that the singer would be more focused on her international tour, was actually stopped by the star herself for demanding a bolder script.
According to Page Six, the 64-year-old “Live to Tell” and “Justify My Love” singer had negotiated with Universal to tell her life story, but the two sides failed to agree on the tone of the production.
“Basically, they don’t like it,” a source close to the Hollywood studio said. “They want it to be (a tone) pop and light. Madonna wants something much more daring, and she has reached an impasse”.
“He would rather go to another studio than change the script. He still wants to make the movie, but now he’s going to pick it up after the tour. He keeps the same writers, but is aware that he may have to change the cast if the actors are not available.
Last June it was reported that ‘Ozark’ star Julia Garner had landed the role of “The Queen of Pop” after a grueling 16-week singing and dancing boot camp, which was also attended by celebrities like Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, Odessa Young and Bebe Rexha.
The film’s story was co-written by Madonna with screenwriters Diablo Cody (Juno) and Erin Cressida Wilson (The Girl on the Train).
Representatives for Universal, Madonna, Cody and Garner declined to comment on the film project.
