The New York Yankees closed this Sunday one of the most anticipated negotiations by securing the Venezuelan utility Gleyber Torres for the 2023 season, thus avoiding the arrival of the team and the player to salary arbitration.
As announced on social networks, the amount agreed between Gleyber and the Yankees was $9.95 million, an amount slightly less than what he had requested in the first negotiations.
Initially, Torres requested a salary for the 2023 Major League Baseball season of $10.2 million, but the currency had offered $500,000 less ($9.7 million), which had unleashed anger among fans who have seen the infielder as a of the most important pieces of equipment.
The Venezuelan, who hit .257, finished third among AL second-base defenders in doubles (28), home runs (24), RBIs (76) and runs scored, while finishing fourth in hits ( 135), being decisive his work in the lineup of manager Aaron Boone.
Now, the Yankees will be able to offer Torres a new multi-year contract at least through the 2024 season, where he will have a chance to become a free agent.
With the signing, the Yankees ensure the return of one of the key figures in the performance of the Mules in 2022 just as they did with sluggers Anthony Rizzo and Aaron Judge, all of them key in the conquest of the Eastern Division pennant in the American League and later the Divisional Series in which they triumphed against the Cleveland Guardians.
