The Departmental Firefighters of Guatemala reported this Monday that seven members of a family died in their home during a fire in the northwest of the Central American country and four minors were identified among the victims.

The fire was recorded during the early hours of this Monday in a house in the Sibinal community in the department (province) of San Marcos, located 300 kilometers northwest of Guatemala City, according to the Departmental Firefighters.

Among the victims of the incident were a 35-year-old man, two women aged 25 and 20, as well as four children between the ages of 2 and 12, the same source detailed.

The incident was reported by residents of the town at two in the morning and so far the origin of the fire is unknown.

The hypothesis of the relief bodies is that the fire was caused by a gas leak, however this has not yet been confirmed.

At the end of 2022, a family of 12 died at home during a fire under similar conditions, in an indigenous community located in the department of Sacatepéquez, in southwestern Guatemala.
