According to British media reports, a British Airways flight attendant was arrested after the pilot of the aircraft suspected she was intoxicated while on duty at 30,000 feet.
The pilot called police to meet the crew on the Gatwick tarmac after he feared the 41-year-old flight attendant was intoxicated with alcohol and probably drugs on the flight from Gran Canaria to the UK.
A source told Britain’s The Sun: “The pilot saw for himself that the crew member was in no condition to work and engage with the passengers.”
“His job is to keep the aircraft and its passengers safe, and he was unable to do it. He radioed for the police to meet the plane,” she added.
“The investigation has shocked everyone at the airline,” the source said.
According to the outlet, passengers watched in amazement as their Airbus A320 stopped at a remote post and did not move for 45 minutes upon arrival in the UK.
A Sussex Police spokesperson confirmed that a woman was ultimately arrested.
“Officers arrested a 41-year-old woman on suspicion of performing an aviation function when she exceeded the prescribed alcohol limit, in contravention of the Railway and Transport Act 2003.
Although the airline has not confirmed it, it is believed that the woman boarded the plane with a certain level of alcohol in her blood and continued to drink while the flight was taking place, a situation that alerted the crew.
