snowstorm-with-a-lot-of-ice-affects-more-than-44-million-people-in-the-us-as-of-today;-no-less-than-1,000-flights-have-been-canceled

Approximately 1,000 flights were canceled this Tuesday due to a winter storm that affects areas in the south, center and north of the country.

Some 44 million people are under alert for the effects of the system whose main danger is ice.

The greatest impact from the storm is concentrated in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area.

Specifically, as of today morning, at the international airport at least 319 Southwest flights and 308 American Airlines flights had been cancelled.

The FlightAware air traffic monitoring site also reported 90 and 29 delayed flights, respectively.

The National Weather Service (NWS) estimated that the effects of the storm will be prolonged and significant, impacting a wide area between the southern Plains and the Tennessee Valley.

Telemundo Noticias meteorologist Carlos Robles warned that the ice that will be registered as of today as a result of the storm will be the most dangerous effect.

The rain that will fall will turn to ice due to the low temperatures, which in turn will complicate traffic on the roads. Low temperatures from the cold air mass will be well below average, and wind chills are expected throughout the central and western United States.

The effects of the storm will continue at least through Thursday morning with freezing rain and sleet.

Extended ice accretion will be greater than 0.25 from West Texas to western Tennessee, with some areas receiving as much as 0.75, officials said.

Sleet accumulations of about a half inch or more could be reported from West Texas to Arkansas.

Ice storm warnings, winter weather advisories and winter weather advisories have been issued for the various affected areas.
