Since the founding of the Tampa Bay Rays in 1998, Tropicana Field has been their home to play Major League Baseball, however the Florida team wants to move to a new home, so this Monday they presented the project for their new stadium , which is expected to be ready for the start of the 2028 Major League Baseball season.
Just as the New York Yankees did in 2009 moving to a new stadium right next to the old one, this will be the project of the Rays who affirm that the new venue will be very close to Tropicana Field and that it will be a gigantic stadium that will include affordable housing, offices and shops.
In the presentation of the plan was the mayor of St. Petersburg Florida, Ken Welch, who indicated his desire for the Rays to stay in the county that he has presided over for a long time, “the team is the best partner for this generational effort and now the next phase to make this dream come true for everyone in St. Petersburg.”
The Rays’ current contract with Tropicana Field ends at the end of 2027, so the new stadium project is expected to be ready for Opening Day of the 2028 season. The current facility would be demolished once the team leaves the dome.
Previously, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred had commented on the urgency to resolve the problem with the Rays’ stadium and that the league wanted the team to continue in the St. Petersburg area, since at the time there were other projects to move the franchise to Tampa Bay and even Montreal due to low attendance.
For the next 4 seasons, the Rays will continue to play their home games at the Tropicana, while a few kilometers away they will begin to build their new home on a 34-hectare plot of land that, like their current facility, is expected to have a dome and much more capacity.
