This Tuesday the Mexican Football Federation together with Liga MX offered a press conference to publicize new aspects that will impact the current Mexican football championship starting in the 2023-2024 season.
The main change that Liga MX will have for next year will be the elimination of the two short tournaments called Apertura and Clausura and it will go to a European-style “long tournament” format, but without removing the popular “Liguilla”. With this format, the teams will start the second tournament of the year with the points they accumulated in the first cut.
Another important point is the return of promotion and relegation in Mexican soccer, which were eliminated in 2018 to prevent small clubs from disappearing because they could not sustain themselves financially in the First Division. They will also seek to eliminate timeshare in the league, a task that they intend to complete by 2026.
As of next season, the limit of foreigners will be reduced to 7 players in the lineup, which will give more priority to the locals and they hope that the foreign presence in the league will decrease by 50% over the next 5 years.
Mexico wants to start a solid project to have a good performance in the World Cup that it will organize in 2026 together with the US and Canada, for this reason it will seek to have a more competitive league at a local and international level; Well, the FMF also confirmed that it is in negotiations with the president of Conmebol Alejandro Domínguez for the return of the Mexican clubs to the Copa Libertadores.

After the terrible role played by Gerardo Martino in charge of the Mexican team in the World Cup in Qatar, the FMF dismissed him from the position and now he continues in the search for a new coach and the directors of the team took advantage of the call to comment on the Focus that seeks to find the new person who is in charge of the Aztec team.
“We are looking for a coaching staff for the Mexican team that knows the Mexican player in depth, gets involved with them and builds trust between the two parties,” were the words of Yon de Luisa Plazas, president of the FMF.
