After starring in an Oscar-nominated film, actor James Martin will return to his day job at a Starbucks in Belfast.

The 30-year-old actor from Northern Ireland had a big role in the dark comedy An Irish Goodbye, which earned a best short film nomination.

In the film, the actor plays the role of a son who reaches out to his brother after the untimely death of their mother.

Martin plays a farmer who is faced with his brother’s intention to sell the land after the death of their mother. The brothers learn that she had a wish list and take it upon themselves to check off the items before anyone buys the farm.

An Irish Goodbye, directed by Ross White and Tom Berkeley, also stars Game of Thrones’ Michelle Fairley, Line of Duty’s Seamus O’Hara and Paddy Jenkins.

Martin began acting as a teenager, before starring in the Oscar-nominated film, he also acted in the BBC television series Ups and Downs.

According to BelfastLive, Ups and Downs earned James Martin a Best Actor award at the New York City Television Festival in 2019.

Martin also played a starring role in season 3 of Marcella, where he plays the brother of a drug dealer.

The actor, who has Down syndrome, works at Starbucks and worked at Scalini’s Italian restaurant.

“I’ve been doing that for a long time. It’s nice,” he said, according to the Daily Mail. The actor also said that he likes to “help customers” and that he can make things like “garlic bread, meatballs, salads and mussels, French fries and things like that”.

When asked about acting like a man with Down syndrome, Martin replied that “anyone can act” and that “it doesn’t matter if they have Down syndrome.”

“Take Stephen Hawking for example,” he said, referring to the late theoretical physicist who suffered from motor neurone disease. “He was a fantastic actor, he knew what he was doing, but you have to treat him like an adult. I always tell people never judge a book by its cover.”
