A woman became famous on TikTok for sharing that she was charged $25 to cut a cake at a restaurant. The cake had been brought by her and her companions. The video, uploaded by GiGi (@vivala_blondiiie) on January 29, has been viewed more than 760,000 times.
“When the waiter asks if we want the cake WE brought to be cut, thinking he’s doing something nice for us… But it was $25,” GiGi wrote in a text overlay on the video.
In a six-second video, GiGi shows the restaurant receipt that includes a $25 charge for “cutting a cake.” The total bill for the night, before taxes and other charges, was $113.
In the comments section, some TikTok users let GiGi know that it’s common practice for restaurants to charge an additional fee for serving outside food.
“They bring plates and forks, which they then have to wash. But it was wrong that they didn’t inform you about the fee,” explained one user.
“Yes. If you bring your own (pie), all restaurants charge a cutting fee. You should ask first,” wrote a second user.
“Lots of restaurants do this but they definitely should have told you about the fee!” repeated another.
Several viewers also shared what they would have done in GiGi’s place.
“I would have asked for the fee to be removed if they hadn’t let me know what they would charge. Then I would have added it to the tip. I would pay for it, but for the waiter,” advised one user.
“Every time a server tries this without talking to us, we just call the manager and remove the fee,” a second shared.
“When a waiter asks if I want something and doesn’t reveal a charge, I give half the normal tip,” another said.
