Jesús Ramírez, the General Coordinator of Social Communication and Spokesman for the Government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), told Reuters that Tesla is considering installing an assembly plant near the new Felipe Ángeles International Airport, in the State of Mexico.
Tesla plans to set up a plant in a developing industrial park about 3 kilometers (2 miles) from AIFA, the spokesperson said, saying the site could serve as a base for the company to export by air.
Ramírez did not give further details, but his statements are added to those he gave to the newspaper El Heraldo de México about possible plans for an investment by Tesla there.
“Tesla will invest there… in an assembly plant, to export directly by air,” Ramírez told the newspaper.
According to Ramírez’s version, Tesla could invest in the T-MexPark, an important industrial park that is being built near the Felipe Ángeles airport, two hours from Mexico City.
Reuters notes that an AMLO government official says Tesla was shown the site, but gave no indication of his plans.
