The environmental authorities of Mexico are investigating the case of a zoo in the state of Guerrero, where several animals that lived in this enclosure were allegedly sold and cooked to make the Christmas party for the employees of the place.
According to the newspaper El Universal, the Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources of Guerrero (Semaren), Ángel Almazán Juárez, announced the result of the investigation carried out on this case, which was carried out in conjunction with the Ministry of the Environment. and Natural Resources (Semarnat) and with the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), around the “Zoolchipan” zoo in Chilpancigo, after several complaints were filed against him about mistreatment and disappearance of his animals.
It was found that the managers of this zoo in Guerrero sacrificed 4 pygmy goats and ate them at the end of the year celebration; In addition, 4 watusis were sold for about $3,250 dollars, money that did not enter the zoo’s accounts. Also, a zebra was exchanged for red deer without authorization and with falsified harvest certificates, Barbary sheep were sold; a macaw, a jaguarundi and 10 snakes are listed as missing and a deer died due to neglect.
Regarding the watusis, it is known that they were sold to a man in the State of Mexico, who exchanged them for tools and supplies that would be used for the maintenance of the zoo, despite the fact that the authorization for the transaction detailed that the exchange should be made for Other animals.
The goats were sacrificed and cooked inside the zoo, to later be served during the New Year’s Eve celebration for the employees.
The authorities continue to investigate the whereabouts of the other animals and it is expected that the former director of this zoo, José Rubén Nava Noriega, will be arrested in the coming days.
