The world of sports in the United States has once again been affected by a lawsuit for sex trafficking by some sports representatives, with snowboarders as the main victims in this new case.
According to a lawsuit filed by three former Stars and Stripes national team snowboarders, the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, snowboarding’s national governing body and former snowboarding coach Peter Foley, they conspired to engage in the sex trafficking of their athletes.
The lawsuit was filed in US District Court in Los Angeles, California, finding that Foley committed sexual assault against the plaintiffs and other female athletes for “nearly 20 years”; The document also details that this work was carried out by her with the “assistance, permission and support” of the USOPC and US Ski. and the Snowboard Federation (USSS).
“The system is focused on money and medals. It’s not focused on protecting these athletes,” said the athletes’ attorney, Sigrid McCawley.
The information was released by the Los Angeles Times on its website, where they revealed that one of the plaintiffs is Rosey Fletcher, a three-time Olympic athlete and winner of the bronze medal in 2006.
“The organization is broken. They need to restore trust,” Fletcher said, referring to the weakened trust parents have in the federation and especially in the various competitions they hold.
Foley was fired from the federation in March 2022 after the US Center for SafeSport suspended the coach over an investigation into sexual abuse in amateur sports. Another figure to be replaced in the federation was CEO Gale “Tiger” Shaw, who is also among the names in the sexual assault lawsuit.
“Peter Foley got into bed, snuck up behind me and started putting his hand down my pants and touching me. He was completely shocked,” Fletcher said; He also explained that on a second opportunity her coach tried to kiss her and take her to the woods after a competition to have sex with her.
