This Friday, February 3, we woke up with the unfortunate news of the death of the famous Spanish fashion designer, perfumer and businessman Paco Rabanne.

According to various international media, Paco Rabanne died at the age of 88, in the town of Portsall, in France, the place where he had lived for some time.

Rabanne’s death was already confirmed by the parent company of his brand, through his social networks, where they emphasized that the Spanish designer “had marked generations with his radical vision of fashion and that his legacy will last forever.”

Similarly, the mayor of Vannes, David Robo, and a spokesman for the multinational perfumery, cosmetics and fashion designer Puig, who owns the brand, have also spoken out regarding the designer’s death.

“Paco Rabanne made transgression something magnetic. Who but he could convince the Parisian woman to demand dresses made of plastic and metal?” Puig asserted in his statement.

Who was Paco Rabanne and why did he become a global fashion icon?

Paco Rabanne’s real name is Francisco Rabaneda-Cuervo. He was born on February 18, 1934 in San Sebastián, Spain, and his first contact with fashion was when he was very young since his mother worked as a seamstress for the famous Cristóbal Balenciaga.

His father was General Rabaneda-Postigo, who was in charge of the Guernica military barracks during the Spanish Civil War. He was shot by Franco’s troops in 1936. Therefore, in 1939, his family sought refuge in France.

Rabanne studied and graduated in Architecture in Fine Arts in Paris. In fashion, Rabanne began by designing accessories, jewellery, ties and buttons for Dior, Saint-Laurent or Cardin and later decided to start on his own with the aim of introducing new materials and techniques.

In the 1960s, she became one of the key pieces in one of the most revolutionary fashion movements by including metals and other unconventional materials in her attire, thus generating a trend towards space.

At the same time, he also began to be interested in the world of perfumery, thus also launching his fragrance brand, which today is one of the most popular worldwide.
