The Honduran man convicted of murdering former beauty queen María José Alvarado and her sister Sofía Trinidad, who was his girlfriend, was murdered Thursday in a maximum security prison in the Central American country.
The National Penitentiary Institute (INP) indicated in a statement that Plutarco Ruiz, 36, was shot at by two prisoners in the Ilama prison, Santa Bárbara department, known as “El Pozo”.
“Immediately the authorities and security personnel (from the prison) mobilized to the module, requesting the two suspects and confiscating the weapon with which they would have committed the homicide,” the INP said in the press release quoted by the Efe agency .
It is not clear how the inmates obtained the weapons.
The Police Investigation Directorate (DPI) and Forensic Medicine arrived at the prison to carry out the investigative procedures and remove the body.
Ruiz had been in prison since 2017. He was serving a 30-year sentence for the crime of femicide against Sofía Trinidad, and another 15 for the murder of María José.
The two sisters disappeared on November 13, 2014. The murders were reported when María José was about to represent her country at the end of that year in the Miss World pageant held in London.
The lifeless bodies of the Alvarado sisters were found on November 19 of that year buried near a spa in the city of Santa Bárbara where Ruiz’s birthday was celebrated.
The convict unsuccessfully claimed that he suffered from mental disorders to prevent the judicial process from prospering.
